classes-basic-handgun.php Include

Basic Handgun

  • Cost: $75
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Class Size: Min 4 / Max 8
  • Provided Equipment:
    • Eye & ear protection provided
    • .22 caliber handgun with 50 rounds of ammunition will be provided
    • (Optional) Bring your own personal handgun & 50 rounds, and receive a $5 credit

This class is for the first-time gun owner, or those who are new to handguns. The purpose of this class is to teach the new handgun owner the essential safety skills required to operate, transport and store a handgun safely and effectively. Students will learn the different types of handguns, major components of each, and how to properly care and maintain their firearm. Students will also learn the fundamentals of handgun marksmanship. The class will conclude with a live fire session on the range, where each student will fire 50 rounds and receive individual instruction from a qualified handgun instructor. Class size is limited to five students to ensure that each person receives quality instruction.

Women-Only Basic Handgun — The same course as the regular Basic Handgun except enrollment is limited to women only. Get your friends together and come and learn how to safely handle a firearm. A great option for Ladies night out!

Concealed Pistols License (CPL) – NRA Personal Protection in the Home

    • Handgun

    • Eye & ear protection
    • Lunch/snacks
    • Pen/Pencil

This is the class required to apply for your State of Michigan Concealed Pistols License (CPL). The class is taught by an NRA-certified instructor, and the legal portion by a licensed attorney. Each student will receive an NRA packet. Must be proficient with operation and use of your firearm (clearing, loading and unloading). Class size is limited to 16 students.

Defensive Pistol Skills I

  • Cost: $150

  • Required Equipment:
    • Defensive caliber handgun (.380 or larger)
    • 250 rounds ammo (check availability at retail)
    • Holster
    • Minimum 3 magazines
    • Eye & ear protection

This class is for the person that already possesses their CPL. This class will build upon the foundation that the Concealed Pistols License (CPL) provided. Topics discussed will be handgun and holster selection, how to dress properly to conceal a firearm as well as the proper mindset required while carrying a firearm. The majority of the class will be spent on the range learning the proper draw stroke of the firearm, reloading, malfunction clearances and the essentials of handgun marksmanship including different shooting positions. Class size is limited to 8 students.

Defensive Pistol Skills I

    • Defensive caliber handgun (.380 or larger)

    • Minimum 3 magazines

This class is for the person that has already developed basic defensive pistol skills. This class will emphasize the importance of movement in surviving a life threatening encounter. Students will learn how to move and shoot and shoot on the move. Other topics that may be covered are close quarters shooting, multiple targets, malfunctions and use of cover. Class size is limited to 8 students.

  • Required Equipment:
    • AR-15 type weapon
    • 60 rounds of 223/5.56/308 ammo (check for availability at retail)
    • Two (2) magazines that hold 20 or more rounds
    • Eye & ear protection

Objectives in classroom:

  • Safety/Presentation of the weapon
  • Parts and function
  • Break down and cleaning
  • Why and why not as a defensive weapon for the home
  • Talk about zeroing the weapon

Objectives on the Range:

  • Zero weapon sitting or prone (Live fire)
  • Stance, footing and sight picture (Live fire)
  • Press Checks
  • Basic reloads

(AR) SWAT Carbine I

  • Cost: $150
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Class Size: Min 4 Max 8
  • Required Equipment:
    • AR-15 type weapon
    • 200 rounds of ammo for your weapon. (check for availability at retail)
    • Eye and ear protection.
    • Ammo pouches or something to hold magazines, pockets will work for this class.
    • 3 rifle magazines, 20 or 30 round.
    • Gloves?
    • Knee pads?
    • Snap Caps 3 or more (can be purchased from Barracks 616).

Objectives in classroom:

  • Safety and function of the AR-15 weapons system.
  • Go over stance, sight picture, and trigger control.
  • Go over options such as slings, pouches, optical sights, lights, and lasers. Pouches, slings, and lights needed for SWAT Carbine II class.
  • What we would like to cover on the range with live fire.
  • Malfunctions.

Objectives on the Range:

  • Press checks. When. Why? Magazine check.
  • We will be covering Mounts, barrel up, barrel down, and sling fire.
  • Ready positions high-low, and ,contact or immediate danger ( Distance from threat (hands).
  • Reloads, Ammo management (AM) and Combat or Speed loads. Don’t run dry.
  • Malfunction drills.
  • Shooting positions, kneeling & prone. Shooting left & right off the line of attack.
  • Target acquisition Slow and fast pair. Center mass/head.

  • Go over weapons and gear.
  • Go over what the live fire portion is going to cover.
  • Go over transition drill.
  • Malfunction Drills both rifle and handgun

Objectives on the Range:

  • Transitions from primary to secondary weapon.
  • Reloading drills.
  • Left and right Barricade.
  • Shooting on the move, forward and back, left and right.
  • Multiple targets.

Objectives in classroom:

  • Talk about low light shooting. Mounted lights and handheld
  • Inverted prone and why? When?
  • Barricades (doorways) home defense. Hallways and intersections, stairways and angles. CQB in hallway.
  • Think about where your finger is…..SAFETY!

Objectives on the Range:

  • Try to cover all in Swat 2 only in lowlight.
  • Barricades, with Shooting positions.
  • Malfunctions as they happen. With Transitions.
  • Shooting on the move, forward and back, left and right.
  • Angles slicing the pie (doorways-hallways)
  • Reloads when needed. You decide when. Try not to shoot weapon dry.
